PAXeast: The Narrative - Day 2

Day two was where we got into the real meat of PAXeast:

Friday, March 26^th, 2010

We drove into Boston’s heart and parked around 11am near The Westin where we were staying. We decided to walk around a bit to get our bearings and found The Hynes Convention Center to be right in the center of everything and it was easy walking distance from our hotel and a number of bars and restaurants. The Pour House had pretty decent food at reasonable prices, and after a quick lunch, it was off to wait in line a bit before 1pm for the doors to open at 2.

Inside, we grabbed our swag bags and merged into the enormous line to get into the show. The hour plus wait was intended to be spiced up with sporadic music and some sort of interactive crowd movement game? I was so far back in the snaking line that I couldn’t really see what was happening. Once the floodgates opened though, the line moved fast as there were no pat downs or anything to prevent the herd from stampeding.

We decided to go directly up to the third floor for the first panel: Journalists vs. Developers. It was an interesting debate as the journalists (Chris Kohler and Patrick Klepek ) discussed reviewing and the process of writing about games with the developers (Jeff Green and John Drake) where the value and pitfalls of each side were weighed against each other with light antagonistic banter.

Although I would have liked to stay for the whole discussion, we decided to leave at 2:30 to wait for Wil Wheaton’s keynote talk at 3pm. Well, we got in line, waited about 20 minutes and were told that it was full. Walking away heartbroken, we decided to head over to the show floor and see what was available. The spectacle of the floor was impressive with striking displays, demonstrations, and hands on areas peppering the giant room.

Crowded does not convey the busyness of the floor, nor of the convention as a whole. The whole weekend was packed with long lines, people turned away from at-capacity panels, and very little room to move around on the show floor. Despite the cramped near rock concert status of the show, walking onto the floor was quite impressive as there were a number of large displays and numerous seats for some hands on time. The most popular booth seemed to be the Red Dead Redemption booth from Rockstar games and the line was never less than wrapped around the decent sized booth in its entirety. I certainly never made it inside, though from the TVs displayed along its perimeter, the game looks very exciting.

After about 2hrs on the floor, the girl and I met up with the rest of the ZombieFrog crew that just arrived, settled into the hotel a bit, grabbed some drinks and dinner and headed back to Hynes for some wandering around, a quick check of the concert series, headed out to The Rattlesnake Bar for the Kotaku party. Unexpectedly, the line to get in was far out the door and down the street, so we scrapped the idea, kept walking, and found some other random bar to grab a few drinks at.

That was pretty much it from day 2. PAXeast was a bit overwhelming, but there was so much to see and do, it could have taken a good week to take it all in with adequate coverage. My only real disappointment was that the lines were so long for most of the bigger games and the panels were often full to capacity and people were turned away. Also, Alpha Protocol was only available to those with Press badges. Boo. Couldn't wait to dig in again on saturday!
