Day three of PAXeast was quite a day:

Saturday, March 27^th, 2010

Saturday started out pretty early. Not as early as expected though, because waking up at 8:15 makes it tough to get to an 8:00am meetup. Wavering a bit on whether I should brave the elements to be late, I decided to go for it, threw some clothes on and ran out the door and furiously searched Twitter for the meetup location on my phone as I worked my way over toward Hynes.

Luckily, the Joystiq wristband dispensing location was just outside the convention center and even more so, I was able to arrive just over :30 min late and still secure a spot for the 9:00am consumption of Blueberry Muffin Tops cereal. It ended up being a great way to start the morning. The Joystiq guys were pretty cool, the cereal was very sugary, there was some of the worst Rock Band singing of all time, and there was an exclusive Split/Second level to be played. Good times.

After that I headed back to meet up with everyone and unwind for a few minutes. It felt weird leaving Hynes just at 10am, just as the show was starting for the day. I felt like I was in that scene in Independence Day where Jeff Goldblum is driving back into D.C. as everyone else is scrambling to leave, but in reverse.

We grabbed a quick breakfast and headed back to the show floor some a few solid hours of wandering, checking out a bunch of smaller and indie games, testing some sweet headphones and 3D setups and enjoying PAX.

We got our first taste of some tournaments Saturday afternoon as well. A little game called Shoot1up was having hourly high score contests, and since there was space, I said Why the hell not? and entered. Meanwhile, JK was prepping his thumbs to represent ZombieFrog in one of the PAX sanctioned tournaments: Street Fighter 4 on the 360. The results of these tournaments (and more) will be the subject of another post that I hope to get up in the next day or two. Good times were had.

Once the tourneys were over, I hightailed it over to the Naughty Dog panel where they went through the creation of a new level for Uncharted 1 set between chapters 3 and 4. With audience participation, it was cool to see a bit of the creative process and what goes into making a level in an adventure game. Very interesting indeed.

I left the panel about 20 minutes early to meet up with the crew and head over to Daisy Buchanan’s (well in advance to ensure entry) for the IGN afterparty. Thus began a raucous night that was probably the highlight of my trip at least. We got to meet Tyler, Arthur, and Anthony as well as a bunch of other cool people. There were prizes given away with reckless abandon, drinks were flowing, and everyone was in a great mood.

Our good start at Daisy’s rolled into a great continuation as we walked over to the Gamers Gone Wild party at Lir Irish Pub put on by SFX-360 and 2old2play. The good times continued here as the beer continued to flow and tournament stations were set up all over the basement level. Justin Wong was playing exhibition matches against anyone and everyone who dared to challenge him. He sure is good at Street Fighter 4.

After much fun, we called it a night and retreated to our cave at The Westin with a handful of microwaveable food and no microwave to be found. Fail. Thus ended the craziness of Day 3 of PAXeast.
