So, I made a quick pit stop at Burger King the other day with the sole purpose being the acquisition of a $1 Double Cheeseburger.  A couple of my friends have tried it and raved about it, and since I was on my way home to leftovers, a quick burger tryst didn’t seem like a terrible idea.  For reference, I generally do not like the BK lounge.  It is my least favorite fast food burger joint, and the Whopper is the only reason I ever go there.

     I felt slightly awkward ordering $1 worth of food, but I got over it and went ahead with the transaction.  My first impression was that the burger was relatively large and somewhat heavy compared to other $1 sandwiches, which seems to be a fairly accurate assessment in hindsight.  As you can see in the picture, this burger has some height, reminding me a bit of a Big Mac in its verticality.  Perhaps this is because I am used to the McDonald’s double cheeseburger / McDouble which tend to be rather flat affairs and serve as the BK double cheeseburger’s closest comparison.  Always a fan of that extra slice of cheese and sesame seeds on my burgers; I liked what was lying in front of me.

     Commencing the snack, I noted a touch more ketchup and mustard than I expected, which is especially good on this burger which might have otherwise have been a touch dry.  I attribute said dryness to a lack of overall grease and not to a deficiency of the double cheeseburger.  Two beef patties, two slices of cheese, some tasty crisp pickles and a nice bun.  This is a simple burger; the way they used to be before veggie lovers got ahold of them and added lettuce and tomatoes.   Overall the flavor was simple and quite pleasing, but not very strong.  The Flame-broiledness seemed a bit tame compared to the Whopper.  Maybe this is due to the smaller patties being used, though cutting out the excess toppings from the flagship burger and with two meat patties, I expected the iconic flavor to be more intense.

    Perhaps not surprising given the height of the BK Double Cheeseburger, it seemed to have a bit of an airy texture and wasn’t quite as dense or toothsome as maybe the McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger is.  It is still heavy overall because it’s a lot of food, it just isn’t dense.   Perhaps this is in part due to better build quality of the burger not causing it to get flattened and denser as a result.  Maybe it owes a bit to the lack of excess grease.  Either way the double cheeseburger has a light feel that isn’t really better or worse than other burgers, it just seemed different.  Also, it kind of reminded me a bit of the frozen hamburgers that you can microwave for a quick snack.  As such, I bought a couple extra and froze them.  I’ll report back on the turnout of that side experiment.

     My final impression is quite favorable.  What you have here is a satisfying burger that is quite large, tastes good, and doesn’t overcomplicate the formula for only a single George Washington.  Values like this are not very common, and I suggest you take advantage of it before it is gone.  I would say that this is likely the single best fast food sandwich you can buy for a buck, at least since the McDonald’s double cheeseburger dropped that second slice of cheese and transformed into the McDouble. Highly recommended.
