Before we get started, I want to make sure that we’re on the same page. There are “puzzle games” and there are games that ask you to solve puzzles. In the former, you have games like Tetris and Bejeweled. In the latter, you will find games including Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright. Blue Toad Murder Files: The Mysteries of Little Riddle is firmly in the second camp and, while it has its bright spots, it doesn’t hold up to its legacy.

The first three chapters of Blue Toad Murder Files introduce the player to the sleepy village of Little Riddle. Shortly upon your arrival, the Mayor is shot and, despite the protestations of the town’s Inspector, you begin putting together the pieces to unravel the mysteries.

The game interface calls up memories of old point-and-click adventures. Unfortunately, the interface isn’t always responsive, which seems odd given the power of the Playstation 3. The art style of the game seems to ape that of the Penny Arcade titles (with apologies to Gabe and Tycho for the comparison). The voice acting, all of which seems to be masterfully performed by only a single voice actor, is extremely melodramatic, adding to the humor. The narrator and the hotel proprietor stand out as extremely enjoyable characters, which is good since they show up regularly throughout the game. The introduction of each puzzle is accompanied by art and music ripped straight from classic film noir.

Throughout your journey you will meet strange people (all with odd mannerisms and voices) and, before they will give you what you need, you’ll have to do something for them. In each chapter, you will be tasked with solving 12 puzzles. For each, there is a goal time and, by solving the puzzle within that time and without mistakes, a Gold Ribbon is awarded. The only purpose of these is for a trophy. In fact, you can give up on every single puzzle and still see everything there is to be seen in the game.

It is in this regard that Blue Toad Murder Files starts to fall apart. The narrative aspects of the game, while occasionally humorous, often drag. There is no way to skip the dialog and go directly to the puzzles. This is intentional, as you will be asked to participate in three recap quizzes in each chapter. Mostly, the questions are easy to answer, but occasionally, the game throws a ridiculous one at you. Regardless, they serve little purpose other than to earn trophies.

The puzzles themselves range from complex logic problems to tangled line puzzles that can be found on placemats in every diner in America. Some of them are quite fitting for a console title. Others are better solved with pencil and paper. Unfortunately, many gamers never mapped Legend of Zelda’s dungeons by hand and don’t know the value of gaming with those on hand. The pacing of the puzzle difficulty is also oddly designed. There are trophies for completing the hardest math and logic puzzles with gold ribbons. In Chapter 2, for example, these puzzles both occur in the first half of the chapter. Further still, some puzzles are simply ill-conceived, especially those that rely on sound cues.

At the end of each chapter, players are asked to identify one of four suspects as the culprit. It is a shame that each of these “Whodunits” only rely on one alibi-breaking clue that is always given right before players are forced to identify the perpetrator. By simply paying attention, there is little chance that players will choose the wrong suspect.

Blue Toad Murder Files comes with a multiplayer option (up to four players). This works best when no one has played the chapter yet. Since the puzzles are identical to the single-player mode, anyone that has already played will have a distinct and unfair advantage. The multiplayer mode is clunky, alternating puzzles between players. In effect, there is no difference between having four players share one controller or each using their own. At the end of the chapter, each player does get to identify their own suspect, but as the rest of the game is more cooperative in nature, it is unlikely that each player will choose a different culprit. There is no multiplayer option for the Puzzle Compendium mode that allows you to replay any puzzle from the chapter once you have completed the story mode.

In conclusion, Blue Toad Murder Files: The Mysteries of Little Riddle is enjoyable while it lasts, which is not very long. Even at the bundle price, the game doesn’t last more than an hour for each chapter and there is no replay value. Going back through the game to earn missed trophies (which cannot be earned in the unlocked Puzzle Compendium and Scene Compendium modes) is tedious at best. The puzzles are not randomized and the recap quizzes are always the same with the possible answers always in the same order. Even the multiplayer option has a limited life. Despite its humor and wit, it is hard to recommend a purchase of Blue Toad Murder Files given the lack of replayability.
