The Taxidermist is an interesting side story that kicks off the Heavy Rain Chronicles. These chronicles are to be a set of additional chapters used to flesh out the back story of the major characters in Heavy Rain. This first episode, which was a free download for those who preordered the game, follows Madison Paige as she is investigating The Origami Killer. Not knowing much about the nature or extent of the planned content for Heavy Rain, The Taxidermist sets a standard for future releases, but where is that bar set?
The chronicle starts with Madison Paige getting a tip that The Origami Killer may live at this address, the home and business of one Leland White, and being the nosy reporter she is, she decides to do some investigating. This chapter seems a bit simpler than Heavy Rain and more straightforward in a way, but that could be due to the length of this more focused experience. Madison snoops around a bit, partakes in a little B&E, and investigates the house turning up some interesting evidence along the way. Unfortunately for our favorite heroine, Mr. White comes home mid-snoop and terror ensues.
It seems a bit odd to me that while on the trail of The Origami Killer, Madison happens to stumble into the house of another serial killer. Maybe that’s not that strange in this city of perpetual downpours, but I sure wouldn’t want to live there. When it rains, it pours I guess.
Taking about twenty minutes or so to run through, this story felt shorter than I expected. Once finished, you can go back to one of three checkpoints to replay as much of the story as you’d like. I replayed the third part of the story a few additional times to see some of the other ways it can play out. Much of the appeal of Heavy Rain lies in the drastically different outcomes and repercussions that follow the decisions you make. As there is no apparent follow up to The Taxidermist, basically there is one consequence for your choices, and it almost makes the experience feel a little cheaper. Anecdotally, I chose not to replay missions in Heavy Rain because I wanted to live with my decisions. Here the whole thing is over so fast that there is nothing to really live with and on the end screen, you are encouraged to play the story over. This makes the focus a bit different from Heavy Rain as you are basically trading the gravity of your choices for the more gamey feeling of trying to “collect” all of the endings.
Having seen three of the five endings, I am impressed at how differently they can turn out, but you would know that aspect already if you have played through Heavy Rain. It is a rather exciting run as the tension of trying to avoid detection and of the combat when caught are as good as the best scenes in Heavy Rain. However, you have to take the good with the bad in this add on content, and again similar to Heavy Rain, the voice acting stands out as not having the polish of the rest of the experience. While it may be worse than any of the voice acting previously, the standalone less invested nature of this episode makes it a bit less important in the long run, or rather the short run.
The length of The Taxidermist is a point of contention when discussing the value of this DLC. While The Taxidermist is a good little self contained experience, it only took about twenty minutes to run through. Having played through and seen three of the five endings, I’ve put in about forty five minutes total. If this were priced at about $3.00 it would be a great purchase without needing to think twice about it, but at $5, I’d be hesitant. I’m as eager as the next person for more Heavy Rain Chronicles, but I hope they are more substantial like Scott Shelby and a little less like Lauren Winters (the prostitute).
The only other real negative I had while playing this chronicle was with the controls. I never had any trouble with the walking in Heavy Rain, but in The Taxidermist, especially when upstairs, it became a bit frustrating. Perhaps it’s because there were so many rooms in such a small area that navigating them was a pain, but between Madison always taking a step or three more than I intended, and the shifting camera perspectives disorienting me, I couldn’t get her to do what I wanted her to do.
I’m interested to see the quantity and quality of future Heavy Rain Chronicles, and will likely bite on a couple to check them out. I imagine that the bar has been set somewhere around the middle with The Taxidermist, as it is a bit short and has a couple issues, but hits most of the same notes that made Heavy Rain so good.
