The tough part of reviewing small scale games like the PSP minis lineup is that they generally do not offer much in the way of depth or replayability which are hallmark qualities of a commendable retail release. Instead, factors such as “fun” and “instant gratification” rise in importance and duration of play becomes much less relevant. Coming at you from the company Beatshapers (who previously brought you, and us, BreakQuest), Normal Tanks is a rather standard old school top-down tank shooter for your PSP slash PS3.
I would love to know the thought process behind the naming of this PSP mini. I take normal to mean average, and in that respect, perhaps the title is apt, but realistically, titles are not meant to be appropriate, they are meant to be enticing. A few more eXXtremes and WiLds might have spiced up the title screen a bit, but let’s talk about this normal game instead of what it’s called. Normal Tanks makes a rocky first impression, due primarily to the poor controls which sucked a lot of the fun out of the game. I know that it is a tank you are driving around, but still. The controls feel too unresponsive and unwieldy, never really allowing any sort of precise smooth play, and hampered my enjoyment throughout.
You move your tank with the dpad (and for some reason can’t use the analog stick) and aim your weapon with the face buttons. The problem here is that you only have four face buttons, but can technically shoot in eight directions meaning that you kind of need to sweep your finger from one button to another or waggle in between. Neither present a fun solution when you are trying to avoid gunfire. The L button switches between the rapid fire light machine gun and the slower but more powerful cannon, and the R button shoots. Both weapons feel pretty good, but the transition between them feels slow and must be accounted for during enemy encounters.

The firefights, if you can call them that, are another point of contention that I need to bring up. Movement operates on rather large squares of space, and often to hit someone, you need to be in line with them, but their bullets travel too quickly for you to dodge them so you will take a bullet in the process. Some of the encounters are particularly bad, highlighted by at least one where you have to travel down a tight single-square hallway with no way to avoid the bullet shot down the corridor at you. While I occasionally found myself wondering where to go to proceed through a level, I found that small amount of exploration to be a welcome distraction from the enemy encounters.
As you progress, your tank will chug it's way through various
locales that succeed in providing different backdrops for the shooting, but lack any context
or logic for the change. I consider
that a benefit. No story is required for
this type of game and none is provided.
A quaint story would be welcomed, but the game certainly cannot be docked
for it’s omission. The boss fights were a highlight of the game as well. Though still tough to dodge, it felt great watching them explode. At some points in the
game, you dock your tank and control a small spider-like bomb around allowing
access to unreachable areas. This
worked pretty well and allows for some different gameplay sprinkled throughout the game.
The visuals are not all that charismatic, but come across as bright and colorful and I didn’t have much problem with them. I do think they scale well and actually seemed more appealing on the PS3 than on the PSP which is not always the case with Minis blown up on a large HD screen. Combined with the DualShock3 being more comfortable, I preferred playing Normal Tanks on my PS3.
This mini would be a solid, dare I say Normal, game, except that it is hampered by the awkward controls. Overall, it seems to lack polish, and more importantly, seems to lack the spark to bring you in, enthrall you, and get you to overlook it’s rough spots. This isn’t a terrible game, but it is a very average game with a few small issues that hold it back.
While I thought Beatshapers’ previous effort, BreakQuest, also suffered a number of problems, I think it fills a specific hole in the mini library and I will keep it around and keep playing it for that reason. Normal Tanks fills no such gap. Both games seem to share some surprisingly bad controls that hold fairly decent games back. All that being said though, if you can pick up Normal Tanks on the cheap sometime, there could be worse ways to waste a few hours. It’s worth playing through once to see the various levels, and if you can get used to the controls, you might even be a good time.
