Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond

This game sort of snuck up on me. I had heard quite a bit about Matt Hazard’s first digital romp, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, but I hadn’t picked it up until this week. I remember hearing two points repeated ad naseum about Eat Lead: 1) The game has more than its share of design and technical issues, and 2) The humor of the game was rather well done. With the release of Matt Hazard’s second outing, I give you my opinion that is largely uncolored by the first, for better or worse.
Let me start by saying I’m a pretty big fan of 2.5D side scrollers. Ever since I first played Pandemonium! on the Playstation 1. I like the depth of field mixed with the old school side-scrolling action.This game definitely fits in that category as it is reminiscent of games like Contra, Metal Slug, and Shadow Complex. I rarely ever get to finish these games though due to the precision platforming usually required to progress. Going into MH:BBaB, I expected a fairly standard affair, and was quite satisfied with the final product. The premise of Blood Bath and Beyond is simple… or convoluted I guess if you actually try to understand it. It boils down to Matt having to go back in time, leaping from game to game in order to save an 8-bit version of himself from his nemesis General Neutronov.
This game does a lot of things right. Compared to Eat Lead, this game comes across as a very smooth and polished experience. The side-scrolling is very smooth with no jaggies and no frame rate drops allowing the direction and art of the levels to come through unscathed. The level design does a good job of changing up the pace through platforming, direction changes, and triggered mechanisms to break up the possible monotony that could arise in the side-scrolling. Each level you play through is a different game from Hazard’s past and contains references to other iconic games such as Team Fortress 2, Mirror’s Edge, and Mario Brothers. The levels vary from pirate beaches to Canada to the moon! They are generally bright, clean, and visually appealing. Also, they are filled with some wonderfully outrageous enemies to kill.
You certainly will do a lot of killing, so it’s a good thing the weapons in the game feel so great. The shooting controls provide a solid framework to plug the game’s fun guns into. The controls are set up intuitively, with L1 stopping Matt allowing for precision aiming, and L2 aiming into the background. While the shooting can feel a bit stiff at times, and I would like to be able to aim on the fly with the right thumb stick, the shooting feels pretty good overall. There is a healthy variety of weapons to employ, and they all feel substantially different which adds quite a bit of variety to the gun play. This is key since you will be killing hundreds of enemies in each level. There is no leveling or unlocking system in place here. It’s far more old school than that. When you kill people, they sometimes drop boxes that contain weapons. Walk over them to pick them up. Very simple.
My favorite aspect of this game, and perhaps its saving grace, is its humor. It is definitely one of the funniest games I’ve played. The humor is not what you would call subtle and is often self-referential, breaking the fourth wall with reckless abandon, and centering around video game clichés and Matt Hazard’s action star mentality. It works well and provides the game with quite a bit of charm that was often bringing a smirk to my face as I was playing.
On top of the overt humor throughout the game, much of my enjoyment was derived from the absurdity that you partake in. Giant killer penguins, stupidly boss-like bosses, Mounties, et cetera are chasing you down and trying to stop you dead. They’ll be streaming in from the foreground and the background keeping you on your toes. It’s all so ridiculous you can’t help but have fun and look forward to what kind of situation you’ll be thrown into next. It’s even better when you’re plowing through with a friend in co-op. Unfortunately, this is limited to local co-op, and while still fun, really seems like a missed opportunity for the game to gain some legs.
The fun does not come without a price though. This game is hard! These side-scrollers tend to pride themselves on their old school punishing difficulty, and Matt Hazard is no different. Initially trying the game on normal difficulty (Damn This is Hard) I was unable to clear the first level. Instead, I had to turn it down to easy (Wussy) and played through the whole game rather quickly, made much easier by the unlimited continues. Later trying every level on normal yielded the same results as before; I have yet to beat one. I tried a few on hard (F*ck This Sh*t) and I’d like to find a man who can beat this game on hard, shake his hand, and buy him a beer…if he even exists. Some of the other issues are really non issues given the downsized nature of the game. Losing voice actors and having text based dialogue feels sort of cheap, but since they “hang a lantern on it,” perhaps it’s part of the campy meta humor of the game.
The main problem with the game is that it is a little light on content. Aside from playing the game straight through in story mode (alone or in co-op), you can play levels individually, or you can play the one unlockable mini game. I really would have liked to see one or two more modes, or something similar, to provide some additional play time. Also, had the co-op been online instead of just local, that would have gone a long way towards justifying the purchase. Really, that ends up being the major negative of this game. There just isn’t really enough here to justify the $15 price tag.
This game boils down to a well made well polished side scrolling shooter. It is funny and fun to play, though light on content. If you’re down with that concept, you should enjoy it. If not, grab it as soon as it drops in price. This game has garnered quite a bit of good will from me (I’ve already picked up Eat Lead) and I can’t wait to see Matt Hazard’s next adventure, be it downloadable or retail.
