PixelJunk Shooter, or PixelJunk 1-4 if you are keeping track of the PixelJunk series is a fun little 2D action adventure from Q Games, a company that has made a name for itself with fun little 2D action games. PixelJunk shooter tasks you with flying through caverns rescuing trapped miners from a colony on an alien planet. The concept is simple and the game mechanics and design philosophy follow suit, reinforcing the simplistic nature of the game.
When I say this game is simplistic, I do not mean it as a negative. Q Games has trimmed out the fat and focused on the central game experience here, and PJ Shooter is better for it. By no means is this game an epic of any sort, but clearly that wasn’t the intent, and if you expected that going into it, that’s your fault, not one of the game. The only caveat to that statement is that the game is a bit on the short side, even for a downloadable game. Coupled with the overall ease of the game, you should breeze through it in a few hours, although I will definitely play through it again in the future.
Despite the name PixelJunk Shooter, and the fact that you do a lot of shooting in the game, this is by no means a dual joystick shooter as we have come to know them. Games like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD are reflex and reaction focused games where the enemies come fast and hard and your game is full of combo strings and near death escapes. This is not like that. This is a slower methodical clearing of each room (which do contain enemies, but only a handful) and certainly does not feel like it’s suffering without the faster play or crazy numbers of enemies; it’s just a different experience.
The controls in the game are set up to guide you through the caverns at that slower pace. For the most part, the twin stick setup provides for smooth ship control. At first it may seem a touch sluggish, but it works very well, especially when you compare PJ Shooter to a similar type of game released on the PSN the week before, Gravity Crash. Unlike in GC, you will not be careening into walls and flying past enemies before you can stop. The movement controls are very refined. The shooting controls, however, not so much.
You shoot with the R1 button and unfortunately can’t hold the button down for rapid fire; you only get single shot here. If you do hold R1 down, you charge up a barrage of mildly homing missiles which builds up your heat meter. This game would have been better served if the missiles were mapped to R2 and R1 had allowed for rapid fire. While not being anywhere near a deal breaker, it’s just a bit wearing on your index finger during some of the shooting sequences.
The heat meter that I just mentioned, is your life bar and can slowly build up (when near lava or shooting) or can nearly instantly max out (when touched by lava or goo directly). Removing yourself from the hazardous situation or taking a refreshing shower will help cool your ship back down. This system seems to work pretty well and ties into the fluid dynamics system that the game is based on.
While your major goal of each stage seems to be saving survivors, this at first overshadows the fact that you don’t need to save them to progress, you need to collect crystals. The crystals are used to open up the boss levels and are not just there for the completionist; they are required even more than the miners who you can actually just let die.
Additionally, there is one special miner (lucky him) that deserves your more focused attention because each special miner has a short blurb to say and is how the limited story is told to you, the player.
The core of PJ Shooter is not any of the collecting mentioned above however. It lies in the interplay between fluids that you manipulate through the game to progress in each puzzle like level. You will be interacting primarily with water and lava which both seem to have a higher than expected viscosity, but seem to be governed by a well done fluid dynamics system that makes the game a blast to play. These fluids form a soft destructible rock mass when they come in contact with each other that can be shot through to tunnel to or protect the miners. Later on in the game, a new element is added in the form of black magnetic goo. The best parts of the game come in the third act (of 3) when there is a less predictable interplay between all three fluids allowing for some of the more interesting puzzles. This ends up making the first two thirds of the game feel a bit like an extended tutorial and it takes a little while before Shooter reaches its full potential, and then its over right when it starts getting good. DLC can help fill that void, but it seems like one or two more full acts would have really solidified the experience.
PJ Shooter oozes thick gooey style much like the lava suit in the game does. The flat 2D art style has a very calming effect. Many of the colors are slightly muted or faded allowing the bold blues, oranges, and blacks of the liquids to stand out, highlighting their importance and focus in the game. The designs are clearly less abstract than in Eden, but no less cohesive or attractive. The aesthetic is simple and effective leaving almost no room for legitimate criticisms.
Ultimately, I can say I’m very happy with the game. While there isn’t a surplus of content, what is there is finely honed and crafted with an obvious care. The basic mechanics of the game are rock solid, the style is irreproachable, and the music is well above average. Despite my niggling issues with the pacing of the game and a few minor control complaints, it is a fantastic downloadable game, the most approachable game in the PixelJunk series, ripe for DLC, and just plain enjoyable to sit down with.
