Stargate Universe
Episode 2: Air Part 2
Original Air Date: 10-02-09

So this is part two of the double length pilot episode that aired as the kickoff of SG-U.

Here's what i thought of part 2:
Part 2 of the 2-hour premiere is a continuation of the first episode.  Having escaped the destruction of Icharus base through the Stargate to who-knows-where using the mysterious 9th chevron, our hapless band of travelers encounter some new problems:

+  Everyone is checking the ship.  With these soldiers and scientists trapped on the Destiny, everyone is going to need to pitch in to figure out what’s going on, and what to do next.

+  Scott taking his girl in his group and not being very subtle about it.  This to me really shows how inexperienced he is and how much he will have to change to lead these people.

-  Eli opening and closing doors.  You don’t know Ancient!  Asshole!  Stop playing with things or you are going to kill everyone!

-  Shady conversation between Rush and SGC.  He was put in charge?  Really?  I doubt it.  I don’t know what to make of Rush at this point, but at least everyone isn’t quite the caricature that they were in SGA.

+  Ancient crates full of…   I wonder if these will come in useful later on?

+  “I’ve got a case of blank paper” “Maybe we should start a suggestion box.”  Ha.  I laughed.

+  Greer was in detention.  What for?  I’m going to guess violence?  Some sort of anger issues fo sho.

+  Scott following the camera ball around.  Ha.  It’s a flying camera!  Could be very useful for exploring this ship.  I see a few shades of the Sheppard/McKay relationship maybe starting to develop between Eli and Scoot.  They are both noobs.

+  CO2 scrubber.  Man, that’s some dirty goop.

-  Chloe with her dad.  Wahh.  I want to be here with you.  Grow up.

-  Eli saying they can’t close the door because there’s something wrong with the “mechanism.”  Oh that’s helpful.  The “mechanism.”  Very descriptive, Eli.

-  Johanssen wanting an all or nothing with solving the oxygen problem.  We figure it out or everyone on the ship dies trying.  Be serious.  Use your head.

+  Senator Armstrong giving his life.  Pretty well done I’d say.  Ballsy move, but it makes sense.

+  Rush saying he’s sorry and none of it was his fault.  I thought he was going to tell Cloe to stop crying because she was wasting air.

-  Scott saying to Chloe, Tell me about your father.  I know this show wants to be moody and darker, but man this scene was rough to sit through.  “All I know is that he wanted you to go on.”  Give me a break.  I felt like he was consoling a ten year old.

+  Rush explaining all the database checks and whatnot that he is doing.  No time to babysit.  Finally a little balance for his craziness.  I totally can now see his stance of, I’m busting my balls here, leave me alone!

-  Weird time bend cheesy effect again.  Oh, it’s for dropping out of FTL.  FTL, but not hyperspace.

+  OMG.  A stargate.  In another universe!  What?  Wait, how?  OK, I guess I can buy into that.  We’ll see.

+  It’s a countdown.  12 hours till they are back in FTL.  Oooh.  Under pressure.  Better get checking that planet.

+  Rush’s candid assessment of people’s value.

+  What’s on the other side of that gate that they found?  Check back next week I guess.

I think this was a pretty good episode, though its hard to look at it as a single episode in light of the fact that it is part two of three.  People are still settling into the ship and that kind of mirrors this show still settling into it's place and trying to find it's groove.  Despite some cheesy moments, i think this wraps up the intro to the people, ship, and universe pretty well and sets this show up to stand on its own two legs.  I like the cliffhanger of there being new stargates and worlds to explore, though it will be really weird to see classicly garbed human/aliens in this show as in the previous.  Lots of tension, I'd say, and lots of promise.  This show just needs to find its legs.
